NOW PLAYING

THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL
NOW PLAYING: Kahala 8

OPENING 5/18: Ward 16, Kaahumanu 6
From the director of SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL is a witty film about British retirees who attempt to live out their golden years in a charming (if run–down) hotel in India. With a cast that includes such stalwarts as Judi Dench and Maggie Smith (“Downton Abbey”), the film features grand performances and a screenplay which delves into each character’s own poignant tale. Dev Patel (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE) and Tom Wilkinson (“The Kennedys”, THE GHOST WRITER) are among the scene–stealers.

BOY
NOW PLAYING: Kahala 8

Inspired by his Oscar nominated short film, Taika Waititi’s BOY is set in 1984 in a rural community in New Zealand. At the center of the story is eleven year old Boy, a high–spirited adolescent obsessed with American pop culture and Michael Jackson. When his absent father returns from a stint in prison, Boy discovers a lovable loser instead of the adventurer he imagined. Incorporating dream sequences, fantasies, and animations, the film also boasts three elaborate musical numbers, based on Michael’s Jackson’s indelible music videos of the era, giving this charming film from the director of EAGLE VS SHARK a distinctive visual dimension.

DAMSELS IN DISTRESS
NOW PLAYING: Kahala 8

Premiering at the Toronto and Venice Film Festivals, director Whit Stillman’s sharp–edged comedy is his first film in 13 years. Like his earlier hits METROPOLITAN, BARCELONA, and THE LAST DAYS OF DISCO, the film focuses on privileged young adults bonded by their sense of entitlement. Greta Gerwig is hilarious as a painfully earnest student who helps run the campus Suicide Prevention Center, helping severely depressed students with a program of good hygiene and musical dance numbers at a bleak East Coast university.

The story focuses on a skeptical journalist and his girlfriend who attempt to infiltrate a mysterious cult led by an enigmatic young woman named Maggie. Intent on exposing her as a charlatan and freeing the followers from her grip, the couple starts to question their objective and each other and they unravel the secrets of Maggie’s underworld. Brit Marling (ANOTHER EARTH) delivers a bewitching performance as the cult leader in this witty, ominous nail–biter.

ELLES
OPENING 6/8: Kahala 8

A provocative exploration of female sexuality that wowed audiences at the Berlin Film Festival, ELLES stars the fearless Juliette Binoche as Anne, a well–off Parisian journalist investigating the lives of two student prostitutes for a magazine article. What begins as a routine assignment quickly turns personal, as Anne is drawn into the lives of these fiercely independent young women and forced to confront her marriage, her competence as a mother, and her own physical needs and desires.

HYSTERIA
OPENING 6/15: Kahala 8

A hit at the Tribeca Film Festival, this British comedy takes a hilarious, progressive look at repressive times. The comedic, romantic action occurs in late 19th century England, when female hysteria was deemed to be “anything that makes males uncomfortable.” Hugh Dancy (ADAM) plays an earnest if naive young doctor who invents the electro–mechanical vibrator, and Jonathan Pryce is his superior, an unctuous authority on female hysteria with no use for modern ideas. Maggie Gyllenhaal brings everything into sharp comedic focus as Pryce’s daughter, a free thinking, fiercely independent suffragette in this delightful must see.

PEACE, LOVE AND MISUNDERSTANDING
OPENING 6/22: Kahala 8

Oscar winner Jane Fonda and Oscar nominee Catherine Keener star as estranged mother and daughter in PEACE, LOVE & MISUNDERSTANDING. Directed by Bruce Beresford (DRIVING MISS DAISY, MAO’S LAST DANCER), this unconventional family comedy follows an uptight lawyer on a weekend getaway to her hippie mother’s farmhouse in the country. On the brink of divorce and with her teenaged kids (Nat Wolff and Sundance breakout star Elizabeth Olsen) along for the ride, the weekend turns into adventure of romance, music, family secrets, and self–discovery.

WHERE DO WE GO NOW
OPENING 6/29: Kahala 8

Winner of the Toronto International Film Festival Audience Award, this joyous film also received rapturous receptions at Cannes and Sundance. Directed by Nadine Labaki, whose CARAMEL similarly celebrated Lebanese life, the film’s action occurs in a secluded Lebanese village where Christians and Muslims live together peacefully. When political conflicts threaten to disrupt their serenity, the village women unite to keep the disturbing news from their men — including sabotaging the town’s lone television set and importing burlesque queens to detract their husbands. The mixture of comedy and heartfelt drama, embellished by musical numbers, has delighted worldwide moviegoers.

TO ROME WITH LOVE
OPENING 7/13: Kahala 8

Woody Allen, who saw a career resurgence with his Paris–set Oscar winner MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, continues his trek through Europe with TO ROME WITH LOVE. It features an all–star cast including Alec Baldwin, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, Penelope Cruz and Greta Gerwig — not to mention Italian actor/director Roberto Benigni making a return to the big screen after a 7 year absence, and Allen himself appearing in front of the camera for the first time in 6 years. This delightful film is comprised for four vignettes that tell of the romances, adventures, and predicaments of number of people in the Eternal City.

SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN
OPENING 8/31: Kahala 8

This inspiring documentary shook up this year’s Sundance Film Festival, winning the World Cinema Award. It’s a tribute to the power of music and amateur detective work, answering the question, What Ever Happened to Sixto Rodriguez? A casualty of the American music industry, Rodriquez’s spare melodies and pungent lyrics were compared to Bob Dylan's. But his albums failed in the U.S., and he was rumored dead from a savage on–stage suicide. However, his music spoke to the South African anti–apartheid movement, and a search for his whereabouts began.
